Rules and Regulations
JAZZ ENSEMBLE
ELIGIBILITY: All performers must be members of one school’s student body. “Guest” directors
may not direct the group and directors may not perform with the group.
SELECTIONS AND PERFORMANCE TIME:
All groups should perform 2-3 compositions ONLY (up to 20 minutes total) of the director’s choice. There
is no required music list. Non-adjudicated pieces are not allowed. Total on-stage time, including set-up, tuning,
optional brief warm-up to adapt to the performance area, performance and on-stage clinic, is not to exceed
30 minutes.
It is recommended that the group limit its performance to 20 minutes in order to allow adequate time for set-up
and clinic. Penalties may be assessed for overtime performances.
WARM-UP: Each group will be given a designated off-stage warm-up period prior to the scheduled
performance. In some locations. Music stands may not be available.
JUDGING: Three adjudicators will evaluate your performance. Conductor’s scores are optional. One adjudicator
will provide an optional on-stage critique/clinic immediately following your performance. If a director wishes
to decline this clinic he/she should submit a written request to the festival office prior to the festival.
Outstanding Soloist Awards will be given to those musicians, regardless of age and classification, who demonstrate
outstanding solo abilities.
EQUIPMENT: Four timpani, chimes, xylophone, concert bass drum, podium, acoustic piano, and music stands in
the performance area will be provided. Drum sets and bass or guitar amplifiers will NOT be provided.
