Rules and Regulations
JAZZ CHOIR / SHOW CHOIR
ELIGIBILITY: All performers must be members of one school’s student body. “Guest” directors
may not direct the group and directors may not perform with the group.
SELECTIONS AND PERFORMANCE TIME:
Jazz and show choirs should perform a minimum of 3 compositions (up to 15 minutes total) of the director’s
choice. There is no required music list. Total on-stage time, including set-up, optional brief warm-up,
performance and on-stage clinic, is not to exceed 30 minutes. It is recommended that the group limit its performance to
15 minutes in order to allow adequate time for set-up and clinic. Penalties may be assessed for over time performances.
It is suggested that, whenever possible, show choirs NOT be conducted.
Jazz Choir is jazz literature without choreography.
A Show Choir consists of show and jazz literature with choreography.
Both jazz choirs and show choirs are judged in OPEN classes. Junior High/ Middle School groups will compete
in separate categories. Prerecorded accompaniments are allowed. The group must furnish its own tape recorder.
Outstanding Soloist Awards will be given to those vocalists, regardless of age and classification, who demonstrate
outstanding solo ability.
WARM-UP: Each group will be given a designated off-stage warm-up period prior to performance.
JUDGING: Three adjudicators will evaluate your performance. You shall furnish three original conductor’s
scores for each selection performed. One adjudicator will provide an optional on-stage critique / clinic immediately
following your performance.
EQUIPMENT: Three microphones, an acoustic piano, and standard choir risers will be provided. Platforms (Show
choir risers), drum sets and bass and guitar amplifiers will NOT be provided.
