Auxiliary Units and Indoor Guard
ELIGIBILITY
All performers must be members of one school’s student body.
COMPETITION AREA
“Competition Area” shall e interpreted as the area in which the unit competes. Performances for
marching and maneuvering groups will be held in an area that is approximately 64 feet wide by 50 feet deep.
Boundary line penalties will not be enforced. The performance area may not always be a gym floor.
OPERATIONAL RULES
1.All sound equipment must remain out of bounds.
2.No cleats are permitted on boots. Only rubber-soled shoes, gym shoes, or taped boots are allowed on the competition
floor.
3.No spear or eagle tops are permitted on working equipment.
4.No pyrotechnics, light out routines or hazardous materials will be permitted.
5.All setups (pre-grounding equipment, props, etc.) must be done after the proceeding unit has exited the floor
and before your unit has begun its performance.
6.A competing unit shall consist of a minimum of 4 members. There is no maximum number.
7.Judging begins with the first note of music or the first step of a squad member after the captain has saluted
the judges or indicated that the unit is ready to begin.
8. Recorded music, either on cassette tape, or CD, should be turned in to the Festival Staff prior to your performance.
TIME LIMITS
FLAG: 3 ½ minutes minimum – 7 ½ minutes maximum
TWIRLING TEAM: 3 minutes minimum – 5 minutes maximum
DANCE TEAMS: 2 ½ minutes minimum – 6 minutes maximum
BOUNDARIES: The unit may enter and exit from any part of the floor.
JUDGING: Two visual arts judges will evaluate all performing groups in this category. Written and cassette comments
will be provided by the judges.
EQUIPMENT
RIFLE: must approximate a military rifle and have a bolt or simulated bolt.
SABER/SWORDS: must have rounded or taped tips. All other parts are optional.
FLAGS/POLES: length and design are left to the discretion of the instructor.
All equipment must be padded or taped to protect the performers and the floor surface. Equipment must be used
in a safe manner.
DROPPED EQUIPMENT
Retrieval by a member or runner is permitted without penalty. Drops may result in a lower score in the General
Effect Category.
NATIONAL COLORS
Use of the National Colors is optional. Should you opt to use the National Flag, the following should be adhered
to:
1.The flag bearer shall never engage in dance or theatrical steps while in possession of the flag.
2.The National Flag shall not be permitted to touch the ground.
3.The National Flag shall always be afforded the general respect associated with it.
